This is a general guideline, not a strict rule: the ideal size also depends on the TV resolution and your personal preference.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to work out: the screen size for your distance or the distance for your screen.
  2. Enter the distance between the sofa and the TV, or the TV size in inches.
  3. Read the recommended range.

What it works out and how

The tool applies the rule that viewing distance should be between 2 and 3 times the screen diagonal, with 2.5 times as the recommended point. So a 55-inch TV, which measures about 140 cm diagonally, looks right from 2.8 to 4.2 metres, with the sweet spot near 3.5 metres.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sit closer with a 4K TV?

Yes. At 4K resolution the pixels are not visible at shorter distances, and many guides accept 1.5 times the diagonal if you want a more immersive picture.

How are inches measured?

Diagonally, from corner to corner of the screen, excluding the bezel. One inch is 2.54 cm.

Is it better to go bigger or smaller?

Within the range, almost nobody regrets the larger screen. Outside it, a huge TV at short distance makes you move your head.
