Sitemap Size Limit Checker

Free tool

Paste or upload your sitemap XML. We check it against the official sitemaps.org limits (50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed) and warn you if you need to split it into several sitemaps linked from a sitemap index. Everything is processed in your browser: nothing is uploaded to RA Software Apps servers.

Results

Paste the sitemap XML (or load the sample) and click Check.

How to use it

  1. Paste the sitemap XML or upload the file.
  2. Compare the URL count and the uncompressed size against the limits.
  3. If you are close to them or over, split the sitemap into several and link them from a sitemap index.

What it works out and how

The sitemaps.org protocol sets two caps per file: 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. The tool counts the URLs, measures the XML size and detects whether what you pasted is a sitemap index rather than a regular sitemap. A file that exceeds either limit may be rejected by search engines.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 50 MB limit apply to the compressed file?

No, it applies to the uncompressed size. You can serve the sitemap gzipped to save bandwidth, but the decompressed content has to fit within the limit.

What is a sitemap index?

An XML file that lists other sitemaps. Each index can hold up to 50,000 sitemaps, and it is the one you submit to Search Console.

Should I split the sitemap before reaching the limit?

Often yes. Splitting by content type makes it easier to see in Search Console which section has indexing problems.
