3. Read the recommended table size and the clear space needed around it.

What it works out and how

The calculation allows 60 cm of table edge per guest. For round tables it uses reference diameters: 100 cm for 4 people, 130 for 6, 150 for 8 and 180 for 10. Rectangular tables are worked out with a width of 90 cm. A clearance of 90 cm is recommended all round, enough to pull a chair out and walk behind it. It handles up to 24 guests.

Frequently asked questions

Is 60 cm per person enough?

It is the comfortable minimum for eating without bumping elbows. With armchairs or for long meals, 70 cm is more pleasant.

Round or rectangular?

A round table helps conversation and suits square rooms. A rectangular one makes better use of a long room and seats more people.

What if I do not have 90 cm clear all round?

With 75 cm a chair can be pulled out, but nobody can pass behind. A bench against the wall is a good fix on that side.
