Yarn needed
How to use it
- Choose the project: scarf, blanket, hat or sweater.
- Set the measurements or size and the yarn thickness.
- Enter the grams per skein and read how many skeins to buy.
What it works out and how
Scarves and blankets are calculated by area: 400 grams per square metre for a scarf and 550 for a blanket. Hats and sweaters go by size: 80, 100 or 120 grams for an S, M or L hat, and 400, 500 or 600 for a sweater. The result is multiplied by a thickness factor, 0.7 for fine yarn, 1 for medium and 1.4 for thick, and divided by the grams per skein, rounding up.
Frequently asked questions
Why buy one extra skein?
Because colour varies between dye lots. If you run short and the lot is no longer available, the difference shows in the garment.
Does the stitch pattern matter?
Yes. Cables, ribbing and crochet use considerably more yarn than stocking stitch. Add 15 to 30%.
Is calculating by length more reliable?
Yes, when the pattern gives metres. Weight is an approximation: two 100 g skeins can have very different lengths.
