Fabric size needed
How to use it
- Enter the width and height of the design in stitches.
- Choose the fabric count: 11, 14, 16, 18 or 22.
- Set the margin you want to leave and read the size of fabric to cut.
What it works out and how
Count is the number of stitches per inch. The stitched size in centimetres is the stitch count divided by the fabric count and multiplied by 2.54, and the margin is added to that twice, once per side. A 140-stitch design on 14-count Aida measures 25.4 cm, and with a 7 cm margin per side you need to cut 39.4 cm.
Frequently asked questions
How much margin should I leave?
Between 5 and 8 cm per side so the fabric can be tensioned in the hoop and framed afterwards. For a cushion or other sewn piece, a little more.
What changes with a higher count?
Stitches get smaller: the same design takes up less room and looks more detailed, but it is harder to stitch and needs good eyesight.
What if I stitch on linen or evenweave?
It is usually stitched over two threads, so the effective count is half: 28-count linen equals 14-count Aida.
