How to use it

  1. Choose the project type: cushion, curtain, skirt or patchwork blocks.
  2. Enter the size of each piece, how many you need and the seam allowance.
  3. Set the fabric width and read how much to buy.

What it works out and how

Twice the seam allowance is added to each piece in both width and height. The tool then works out how many pieces fit across the fabric width and how many strips are needed to place them all; the total length is the number of strips times the piece height with its allowances. The result is the minimum fabric with all pieces laid in the same direction.

Frequently asked questions

Which fabric width should I enter?

The usable width, excluding selvedges. The most common are 110, 140 and 150 cm; it is stated on the bolt or the product sheet.

Do I need more fabric if it is patterned?

Yes. To match a print, add one full pattern repeat for each piece or panel.

Should I allow for shrinkage?

Cotton and linen can shrink 3 to 5% in the first wash. Buy a little extra and wash the fabric before cutting.
