What it works out and how
Gross volume is height times width times depth divided by 1000, which gives litres. Since a suitcase is not a perfect box, the tool applies 70% efficiency to estimate the space you can really use, discounting wheels, telescopic handle, rounded corners and lining. A 55 × 40 × 20 cm cabin bag has 44 gross litres and about 31 usable.
Frequently asked questions
Do airline dimensions include the wheels?
Yes. The limit applies to the full exterior, wheels and handles included. The litres a manufacturer advertises usually refer to the interior.
How many litres do I need for a week?
As a guide, 60 to 80 litres for one person. For a three or four day trip, 35–45 litres is enough.
Hard or soft shell?
A soft bag gives and takes a little more; a hard shell protects the contents better but has no give at the airport sizer.
