How to use it

  1. Enter the screen diagonal in inches.
  2. Choose the aspect ratio: 16:9, 21:9, 4:3 or 32:9.
  3. Read the actual width and height of the screen in centimetres.

What it works out and how

A screen's inches measure its diagonal, and one inch is 2.54 cm. With the diagonal and the aspect ratio, width and height follow from the Pythagorean theorem. That is why two screens with the same inches can differ a lot in size: a 34-inch 21:9 monitor is wider and considerably shorter than a 34-inch 16:9 TV.

Frequently asked questions

Does the measurement include the bezel?

No. The diagonal refers only to the visible panel. To see whether it fits a cabinet, add the bezel and the stand, which are listed on the spec sheet.

Which screen has more area for the same diagonal?

The one closest to square. For the same inches, a 4:3 has more area than a 16:9, which has more than a 21:9.

Which aspect ratio is best for work?

16:9 is the standard. Ultrawide 21:9 and 32:9 replace two monitors and suit spreadsheets and editing.
