How to use it

  1. Enter the number of pages in the script.
  2. Choose the pace: fast, normal or drama.
  3. Read the estimated runtime and its range.

What it works out and how

The tool starts from 55 seconds of screen time per page and applies a factor by pace: 0.9 for a brisk, dialogue-heavy script, 1.0 for a normal one and 1.1 for a slow drama. Being an estimate, it also shows a range of 10% above and below. A 100-page script at normal pace comes to about 92 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Was it not one minute per page?

That is the classic rule, valid only with standard screenplay format. In practice the result tends to come in a little under, which is why 55 seconds is used.

Why does dialogue run faster?

A page of quick dialogue shoots in less time than a page of described action, where a single line can take a minute on screen.

Does it work with any format?

Only with standard format: 12-point Courier and industry margins. With another typeface or layout the ratio no longer holds.
