Fill in the fields and press Calculate to see the result.

How to use it

  1. Enter the car's battery capacity in kWh.
  2. Set the starting charge percentage and the one you want to reach.
  3. Choose home or public charging, or type your own price per kWh, and read the cost.

What it works out and how

The energy that goes into the battery is its capacity times the difference between the target and starting percentages. Since some is lost in the charger and cabling, billed energy is obtained by dividing by 1 minus the losses, 10% by default. The result is multiplied by the price: 0.15 per kWh as a home reference and 0.40 for public charging.

Frequently asked questions

Why is charging to only 80% recommended?

Above 80% charging slows down a lot and the battery is stressed more. For daily use, staying between 20 and 80% extends its life.

Is 10% really lost?

It is a reasonable figure for AC charging at home. In severe cold or with the car preconditioning the battery, losses can be higher.

How do I work out cost per kilometre?

Multiply the car's consumption in kWh per 100 km by the price per kWh and divide by 100.
