What it works out and how
Stacked discounts do not add up: each one applies to the price left by the previous one. 20% followed by another 20% is not 40% but 36%, because the second acts on the remaining 80%. The tool multiplies the factors of each discount and shows the final price and the single percentage they amount to.
Frequently asked questions
Does the order of discounts matter?
If they are all percentages, no: the result is the same. It changes when one is a fixed amount, such as 10 off from a coupon.
Which is better, a straight 30% or 20% plus 10%?
The straight 30%. 20% plus 10% stacked amount to 28%.
Is tax applied before or after?
Where shelf prices include tax, the discount applies to that price. The percentage saved is the same either way.
