Consumption and cost
How to use it
- Enter the appliance power in watts.
- Set how many hours a day you use it and the price per kWh on your tariff.
- Read the cost per day, week, month and year.
What it works out and how
Daily consumption in kWh is the power in watts divided by 1000 and multiplied by the hours of use. That consumption is multiplied by the price per kWh, which defaults to 0.15, and projected to a week, a 30-day month and a 365-day year. A 2,000 W heater running 4 hours a day uses 8 kWh, that is 1.20 a day at that price.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find an appliance's power?
On the rating plate, usually on the back or underneath, or in the manual. It is given in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW).
Does the appliance always draw its maximum power?
No. A fridge or a thermostat-controlled air conditioner runs in cycles. For those, a plug-in energy meter gives the real figure.
Which price per kWh should I enter?
The one on your bill, taxes included. On a time-of-use tariff, use the rate for the period when you usually run the appliance.
