Your car's true cost
How to use it
- Enter the car's price, the years you will keep it and its annual depreciation or resale value.
- Add insurance, maintenance, fuel consumption, fuel price and annual distance.
- Read the total cost and the cost per kilometre or mile.
What it works out and how
Depreciation is the price multiplied by one minus the fraction of value it keeps after the given years, or simply the price minus the resale value if you know it. To that are added insurance, maintenance and fuel, which is distance over 100 times consumption times the price per litre. The total divided by the distance driven gives the true cost per kilometre or mile.
