How to use it
- Enter the trip distance in kilometres and tick whether it is a round trip.
- Set the car's consumption in litres per 100 km and the fuel price.
- Add the number of occupants and read the total and per-person cost.
What it works out and how
Litres needed are the distance, doubled for a round trip, multiplied by the consumption and divided by 100. The cost is that number of litres times the fuel price, and the per-person cost comes from dividing it by the occupants. A 400 km round trip at 6 l/100 km uses 48 litres.
Frequently asked questions
Which consumption figure should I use?
Your car's real one, not the official one. The trip computer shows it, or you can divide the litres refuelled by the kilometres driven and multiply by 100.
Does it include tolls and parking?
No. It only covers fuel. Add tolls, parking and, to be fair when sharing costs, something for wear separately.
How much does consumption rise on the motorway?
At 120 km/h, with a loaded car or a roof rack, consumption can rise 10 to 25% over mixed driving.
