Plants needed
How to use it
- Enter the length of the hedge.
- Choose the species or enter the plant spacing by hand.
- Tick whether you want a double row and read the number of plants.
What it works out and how
The number of plants is the length divided by the spacing, rounded up, plus one to close the end. The preset spacings are 35 cm for privet, 55 cm for laurel and 27 cm for boxwood; for another species you can enter your own. If you choose a double row, the quantity is doubled.
Frequently asked questions
Single or double row?
A double row, planted in a staggered pattern, gives a denser, wider hedge sooner, but costs twice as much and needs more depth.
Can I plant closer so it fills in faster?
A little, yes. Too close and plants compete for water and nutrients, and in the long run the hedge thins out at the base.
When should a hedge be planted?
In autumn or late winter, with moist soil and no hard frost. Pot-grown plants can go in at almost any time if watered well.
