Panels and posts needed

Enter the data and press "Calculate panels and posts" to see the result.

How to use it

  1. Enter the total length of the fence.
  2. Set the panel width and, if there are any, the number of corners.
  3. Read how many panels and how many posts you need.

What it works out and how

The number of panels is the length divided by the panel width, 1.8 metres by default, rounded up. A straight run needs one more post than panels, because each panel sits between two posts and the ends have their own. The corners you enter are taken into account in the post count.

Frequently asked questions

What if the last panel does not fit whole?

It gets cut to size. That is why the count rounds up: the last panel is almost never used in full.

How deep should posts be set?

As a rule of thumb, a third of their height above ground, with a minimum of about 60 cm, and fixed with concrete.

Do I need permission to put up a fence?

It depends on the local authority and the height. Check local rules and talk to your neighbour before fencing a shared boundary.
