Washing Machine Capacity Calculator

Free tool

Before buying a new washing machine, calculate the recommended capacity based on how many of you live at home and how often you do laundry.

Result

Enter your household size and laundry frequency to calculate the recommended capacity.

How to use it

  1. Set how many people are in the household.
  2. Set how many loads you run per week.
  3. Read the recommended capacity in kilos.

What it works out and how

The tool estimates the laundry the household produces each week from the number of people, spreads it over the loads you run and suggests the retail capacity that covers that load, within the usual sizes of 6 to 12 kg. The fewer loads you want to run, the larger the drum has to be.

Frequently asked questions

What do the kilos of a washing machine mean?

It is the maximum weight of dry cotton laundry the drum takes. Synthetics, wool or delicate programmes take considerably less.

Does a large machine use more?

With a full drum it uses less per kilo of laundry. Routinely run half empty, it wastes water and energy, although many models adjust consumption to the load.

Will a duvet fit?

A double duvet generally needs a drum of 9 kg or more. With less it cannot move and comes out poorly washed.
